Two new studies have investigated why fewer women, compared to men, study and work in the so-called STEM subjects in the United States: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The American Association of University Women(AAUW) examined existing research. Its report “Why So Few?” suggested ways to interest more girls and women in the STEM fields. The researchers found that cultural and environmental factors make a difference.
Researcher Christiane Corbett says more boys than girls score very high on math tests in most countries, but Iceland and Thailand are exceptions.“This is something that we point out in our report—that cultural factors and societal factors can make a difference in who achieves at the very high levels and whether girls are achieving or not.”
Another study carried out by the Campos Company for the Bayer Corporation in the United States asked more than 1,000 women and minority members of the American Chemical Society about their experiences.77% said not enough women and minorities are working in STEM today, because they were not encouraged to study those subjects in school.
The study, producing results similar to the AAUW research showed there’s still a lot of work to be done.“They say their interest in science begins before the age of eleven. So we need programs that get in front of kids while they’re young in elementary school.”
Increasing diversity in professions leads to better products, better science. And developing this science and engineering workforce is important to the nation’s economic development.
“No matter what career you go into, whether it’s accounting, human resources or science career,it’s important that you can think creatively, you can work in teams, you can adapt to change and that’s important for everybody,” says Rebecca Lucore.

Sarah Bigler, who lives in Indianapolis, was shopping with her kids at a Target last week, according to a Facebook post. When Bigler joined the checkout line, she ended up behind an elderly woman who not only wanted to pay in change, but also requested to pay for her items one by one.
The employee,Ishmael Gilbert, remained calm and accommodating, helping the woman with whatever assistance she needed.“Never once did this employee get unfriendly, angry or roll his eyes.” Bigler wrote.“He was nothing but patient and kind.”
The mom, whose daughter had watched the employee’s understanding conduct, took a picture of Gilbert’s interaction with the elderly woman and shared it on Facebook. She mentioned that that day, both she and her daughter were reminded of how important patience is.“We left Target with a cart full of consumable items.but what is more—a heart full of gratitude for such an invaluable lesson.” Bigler wrote.“If you are ever in the Glendale Target give Ishmael a smile and a nod.The world could use mole people like him.”
Gilbert had started working at the store a few days before Bigler’s visit,The Indianapolis Star reported. While the elderly woman was checking out,she became visibly nervous.Gilbert reacted by treating her with respect and care.Having counted out the change,he answered her a few questions and even went to another checkout lane to find the shopper a reusable bag,all while other shoppers were leaving his line for faster lanes.
While watching Gilbert for a while, the mom wrote that she was no longer angry. In fact, she realized it was a privilege to catch such polite behavior.“I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all—that my daughter was instead witnessing the man’s patience and taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger;”Bigler wrote in the Facebook post.“Furthermore,I realized that I,too, needed a refresher on this lesson.”
59.What can we learn about the elderly woman?
60.What did the employee do for the old lady?

In a democratic society citizens are encouraged to from their own opinions on candidates for public offices, taxes, constitutional amendments（修正案）,environmental concerns, foreign policy, and other issues. The opinions held by any population are shaped and manipulated by several factors: individual circumstances, the mass media, special-interest groups, and opinion leaders.
Wealthy people tend to think differently on social issues from poor people.Factory workers probably do not share the same views as white-collar workers,non-union workers.Women employed outside their homes sometimes have perspectives different from those of full-time homemakers. In these and other ways individual status shapes one's view of current events.
The mass media, especially television, are powerful influences on the way people think and act.Government officials note how mail from the public tends to “follow the headlines”.Whatever is featured in newspapers and magazines and on television attracts enough attention that people begin to inform themselves and to express opinions.
The mass media have also created larger audiences for government and a wider range of public issues than existed before.Prior to television and the national editions of newspapers, issues and candidates tended to remain localized. In Great Britain and West Germany, for example, elections to the national legislatures were usually viewed by voters as local contests.Today's elections are seen as struggles between party leaders and programs. In the United States radio and television have been beneficial to the presidency.Since the days of Franklin D.Roosevelt and his "fireside chats",presidents have appealed directly to a national audience over the heads of Congress to advocate their programs.
Special-groups spend vast sums annually trying to influence public opinion.Public utilities, for instance, tried to sway public opinion in favor of nuclear power plants.Opposed to them were citizens' organizations that lobbied to halt the use of nuclear power.During the 1960s the American Medical Association conducted an unsuccessful advertising campaign designed to prevent the passage of medicare.
Opinion leaders are usually such prominent public figures as politicians,show-business personalities, and celebrity athletes. The opinions of these individuals, whether informed and intelligent or not, carry weight with some segments of the population. Some individuals, such as Nobel Prize winners, are suddenly thrust into public view by the media.By quickly reaching a large audience, their views gain a hearing and are perhaps influential in shaping views on complex issues.

The Importance of Accessibility Awareness
At a recent Teen Leadership of Jewish Family Services meeting, people with disabilities talked about their lives. bd blank However, what amazed me most was the great importance of education about handicap accommodations (残疾人便利设施).
One school-teacher who is blind, and a woman who has used a wheelchair all her life are two important members of the National Group for Disabled Persons, devoted to raising awareness about disabilities. bd blank These include handicap parking spots, handrails, and wheelchair ramps. One big concern is the people who take advantage of aids, such as handicap parking spaces. bd blank And the meeting focused on educating the public.
Some handicap spots have extra room next to them, marked with the “No Parking” signs.“As long as I'm not in the spot,I can take the no-parking area next to it,” some people say. However, the woman who uses a wheelchair disagrees to this. The space exists to allow someone in a wheelchair to have room to get in or out of their car. bd blank
Some walkways have handrails next to them to help those who require extra assistance.Whether it is a blind person seeking guidance or an elderly person seeking support, the rail is there for walking.Sometimes the rail is blocked,by a parked bicycle for instance, and consequently made useless. bd blank People who are informed of the rail’s use would be less likely to mistake it for a bike rack.
Meeting some of the people who are affected by the lack of education about accommodations made me see that there is work to be done.If more people were educated about the proper uses of accommodations, there would be fewer challenges for people with physical disabilities.
A.Accommodations will vary according to the needs of the disabled.
B.As with the parking spot, this is more likely a case of lack of education.
C.They educate about all the accommodations for people with disabilities.
D.Improvement must be made so that disabled people can fully participate.
E.If there is a car in that space, the handicap parking spot is no longer useful.
F.So people without disabilities need to be educated about these accommodations.
G.I was amazed to hear about the challenges faced by people with physical disabilities.
